REPLACING VIRTUAL ‘LIKE’

or GIVE ME BACK ‘REALLY’

How do we regain verbal intent in message, and omit the disconnected verbiage?

Communicative overuse of 'like' in everyday speech by young people reinforces virtual lifestyle

Correction is simple and requires 2 basic steps.

1 AWARENESS

Awareness is the first step in any process of change.

Recording the person’s spontaneous talk is the most reliable speech sample. Another practical option is to conduct a conversation and point out and count the ‘filler words’ as they occur.

Sensory Awareness:

Listening to speech recording or becoming conscious of the frequency of ‘like’ usage during conversation will promote understanding and motivate the speaker to change.

Correction of addictive 'like' usage in interpersonal speech lets you communicate maturely.

2 INSTRUCTIONS for SPEECH:

Person seeking change needs to be reminded daily of the proper use of the word ‘like’ as a verb or preposition in examples.

It is necessary to instruct to omit ‘like’ word in all other instances.

Repetition – to increase intent and establish a correct usage.

Person needs to repeat phrase used improperly with ‘like’ and repeat the very same phrase without saying ‘like’.

Self monitoring:

Repeat the process of listening and consciously re-phrase message.

Assign specific interaction ( converse with friend) reduce rate, and consciously omit the word ‘like’.

Last tip:

Substitution: Imagine saying the same sentence using the word ‘REALLY’.

Try and see.
